A Brief UMO Biography UMO began their creative collaboration in 1987. The company is committed to a permanent Ensemble of performers who create, compose and direct their own productions. The Ensemble's creative process is rooted in physical theater. Improvisations in character, vocalizing, writing and movement are the basis for the creation and development of new works. For each piece there is one member of the Ensemble who serves as artistic director, holding the larger picture in mind and making the tough editing decisions. Since their arrival on Vashon Island in 1989, UMO Ensemble has created fifteen original works for the theater. The Ensemble's material reflects their diverse range of styles and skills: the copper sculpture "dance animation" of Instinction (1987); the fifteen foot tall puppetry of Who Nose (1990), the mask and Red Nose clown work of Midnight Corn ix (1990) and Naughty Bits (1991); the lovably irreverent Buffoons of El Dorado (1992) and Insatiable Cabaret (1993), the acrobatic Djool of Caravan of Dreams (1994), and the haunting, stripped- down beauty of the soon to debut Body Inheritance. In addition, UMO annually produces Islewilde, a series of workshops followed by a free to the public, community-wide performance celebration on their home island of Vashon. In the past six years, UMO Ensemble has become known as one of the most innovative, compelling and critically acclaimed performance companies based in the Pacific Northwest. The Ensemble has performed at festivals, in theaters and in schools throughout the Northwest, the U.S. and in Canada. Ensemble members are: Esther Edelman, Martha Enson, David Godsey, Kevin Joyce, Janet McAlpin and Ela Lamblin. |
