The conductor and composer Leonard DUMITRIU was born in Iasi, Romania, on the 19th of August 1962. The father was clarinet player at the Iasi Symphonic Orchestra, professor at the Iasi High School for Music and Iasi Music Conservatoire. The mother was a mezzo-soprano in the Iasi Opera Chorus. As a child Mr. Dumitriu attended Symphony Orchestra rehearsals, Opera Chorus rehearsals and many Dress Rehearsals. In this way he was acquainted with the life and activity of the Singers and Instrumentalists.

At the age of 6, in 1968, he became a pupil at the Iasi High School for Music, piano class. For 12 years, until 1980, when he graduated, he participated at many recitals, played as asoloist with the Orchestra and also accompanied many instrumentalists ad singers in their recitals. During the 12 years of study, he have attended many Symphony Concerts and Opera performances.

Between 1981-1985, Mr. DUMITRIU was a student at the Iasi Music Conservatoire, the composition and conducting class. He had the best professors at the disciplines composition, conducting, harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, history of music, and he was one of their best students. Mr. DUMITRIU's compositions were played every year at the composition class recitals, and he conducted several concerts of the Conservatoire Orchestra and the Opera class production, "Il matrimonio segreto". He graduated the Iasi Music Conservatoire in 1985, with Merit Diploma.

In 1986 he was employed as conductor at the Iasi Romanian Opera and he has been invited to conduct at many Romanian Opera Theatres, also at the Moldavian National Opera and Novi Sad Opera (Serbia). In 1994 and 1995 he participated at 2 tours in Italy, with the Iasi Opera Staff. Since 1986 he co-operated with the best Romanian soloists and with many directors. After some years of practice, Mr. DUMITRIU felt that he has the experience and instructive capacity to work with the students. He gave evidence of a lot of patience and understanding and he used a proper language for people without a large musical experience. He obtained beautiful results at the singers recitals and the concerts with the orchestra.

As opera conductor, Mr. DUMITRIU observed that soloists coach better when they rehearse with the conductor at the piano. In this manner, as an accompanist too, he worked all his opera premieres since 1992: Il matrimonio segreto, Die vier Grobiane (Romanian Television made a film of this opera) and Mefistofele (last November).

Mr. Dumitriu considered that for beeing a complete conductor he need to tackle the Symphonic repertoire as well as that of Opera and Ballet. He conducted works from the caoncerto and Symphony repertoire, with some Romanian Symphony Orchestras in Iasi, Bacau, Botosani, Satu Mare, Timisoara, Constanta.
