Biography

Twenty-five-year-old violinist Judith Ingolfsson is the recipient of numerous prestigious competition prizes. In September 1998 she was named the First Prize Winner of the world-renowned International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. In addition to winning the 24-karat Joseph Gingold gold medal presented by the competition for the first time, she won a special prize for the best performance of a Bach work. In 1998, she received the Nathan Wedeen Management Award at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, where she was also honored with the WQXR prize and the Cape and Islands Chamber Music Festival prize. Other recent prizes include the Third Prize and the Audience Award at the 1997 Paganini International Violin Competition and First Prize! at the 1997 D'Angelo International Young Artist Competition. Since making her solo debut with the Waiblinger Chamber Orchestra in Germany at the age of eight, Ms. Ingolfsson has been featured as soloist with numerous orchestras in the United States and Europe, including the Kansas City Symphony, the New Haven Symphony, the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, the Icelandic Symphony, and the "Orchestra of Theater Carlo Felice" in Genova, Italy. In the United States, Ms. Ingolfsson has presented recitals in venues such as the Astral Emerging Artists Recital Series in Philadelphia, the Arts Renaissance Tremont in Cleveland, the Heritage Concert Society in Connecticut, the Musical Excursion Series in New Orleans and the Great Performers Series at the Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center in Erie. She has also toured extensively abroad, appearing in recital at the Hong Kong Chamber Music Society,"Jeunesses Musicales" in Switzerland, in Toroello di Montgri, Spain and in St. Gerold, Austria. Her performances have been broadcast on major television and radio stations throughout the United States and Europe, including WQXR of New York and "CBS" Sunday Morning. In May 1999, she was named "Debut Artist of the Year" by NPR's "Performance Today". An enthusiastic chamber musician, she has participated in various festivals including Summer Music in Des Moines, Iowa, the Spoleto Festival (USA), the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland and the Orlando Festival in the Netherlands. As a result of winning the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Ms. Ingolfsson will tour the United States and Europe making over thirty concerto and recitals appearances during the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons. Among these performances are a Carnegie Hall recital on April 1, 2000, as well as concerto performances with the Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Albany, Richmond and Charleston Symphonies. Highlights of her 1998-1999 season included a New York recital debut at the Kosciuszko Foundation Town House and appearances as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Wolfgang Sawallisch, the Icelandic Symphony, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra and the Fort Worth Symphony. A native of Iceland, Judith Ingolfsson is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has studied with Jascha Brodsky, David Cerone and Donald Weilerstein. She performs on the 1683 ex-Gingold Stradivarius violin on loan from the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
